Setting up Power BI reporting

How to set up Power BI reporting for Nialli Visual Planner

Nialli™ Visual Planner provides a template with a variety of comprehensive and flexible reports in Microsoft® Power BI. These reports give project teams various insights into the health of a project using information compiled simply as a by-product of day-to-day work and coordination. Included are extensive filtering and customization possibilities using Power BI tools.

Each of these reports can be customized to suit the individual needs of an organization and new reports can be created using project data. Creating new reports requires some level of skill with Power BI.

Requirements

The desktop version of Microsoft Power BI must be installed on your computer. To download it, go to: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/products/power-bi/downloads

We recommend creating a folder called Nialli Reports on your C: drive in the ProgramData folder. This will be where you will store your Power BI template and exported data files. This will keep relevant files together and make it easier to manage and launch reports. If desired, you can create a folder in a location of your choice.

Next, download the Power BI sample template. Place it in the folder in which you’re filing the exported plan data. This will keep relevant files together and make it easier to manage and launch reports.

Generate a Power BI report using the sample template

  1. Place the Excel® data file that you exported into the Nialli Reports folder that you created.
  2. Open the file and Enable Editing and Save the file.
  3. Right click on the file name and select Copy as path. You will be inputting this path in the next steps.
  4. Open the Power BI template. It will open Power BI, and a window will open requesting the file path that you copied. Paste the file path into the text box and click Load.
  5. The data will load into Power BI, and you will be able to view the reports outlined below using the tabs along the bottom of the window.

Note: If you give the Excel export file the same name each time you export it, the Source path will remain the same and the new reports will be automatically opened when you launch Power BI. If you decide to save the data in separate files weekly or monthly, you will need to follow steps 1 through 4 in the instructions above each time you want to view a new report.
