Constraint log

Constraints represent issues, conditions or dependencies that must be resolved before an activity can proceed. These may include required inspections, materials availability, approvals or coordination between trades. Each constraint is tied to a specific activity and includes critical details, such as who’s responsible and when it must be resolved.

By tracking constraints, teams can proactively remove blockers and keep the project tasks on schedule. Constraints can be added directly in the log or by editing an activity tag

Note: Project-level constraints that are blocking an entire area of work or multiple activities would be added through the constraint log.

How to open the constraint log

Follow these steps to access the full list of project constraints:

  1. In the side menu on the left, click the Constraint log button.
  2. The constraint log dialog will open in the center of the screen.

This log provides an overview of all constraints, both active and resolved, organized in an easy-to-scan table. The window may be moved to anywhere on the plan.

Understanding the constraint log tabs

The constraint log is divided into three tabs:

  1. Open — a list of all constraints that are currently unresolved and may block progress.
  2. Resolved — a history of constraints that have already been addressed.
  3. All — a combined view showing both open and resolved constraints in one list.

Each tab contains a list of constraints, with each row representing a single constraint.

Columns in the constraint log

Each constraint is listed with the following details:

  • Date — when the constraint was logged or occurred.
  • Constraint — a short description of the issue.
  • Activity constrained — the name of the affected activity (auto-filled when applicable).
  • Details — any additional context or notes.
  • Person responsible — the person or team accountable for resolving the constraint.
  • Date to be resolved — the deadline for resolution, ideally before the constraint becomes critical.
  • Resolved date — when the constraint was marked as resolved.
  • Edit icon — opens the constraint to allow updates.
  • Done toggle — marks the constraint as resolved or unresolved.

Additional options and actions

At the top of the constraint log, you’ll find useful controls:

  • Export to PDF — download the current constraint list in a printable format.
  • Export to Excel — download the list as an Excel® file for reporting or tracking.
  • Add constraint — open the Add constraint dialog to log a new issue.

At the bottom of the dialog, you’ll find a Close button to exit the constraint log.

How to add a new constraint

There may be a constraint on a project that is not specific to one activity. When this occurs, it can be added in the constraint log.

To log a new constraint:

  1. Click the Add constraint button at the top of the constraint log.
  2. The Add constraint dialog will appear.
  3. Fill out the following fields:
    • Constraint (required) describe the issue briefly.
    • Details (optional) — include any extra notes or context.
    • Person responsible (optional) — assign ownership.
    • Date to be resolved (required) — select a deadline in the calendar.
  4. Click Save to create the constraint or Cancel to discard.

Note: The Save button is unavailable until all required fields are completed.
