Constraint log (field view)
Information on using the constraint log when accessing Visual Planner on a mobile or tablet device
Overview
Constraints represent issues, conditions or dependencies that must be resolved before an activity can proceed. These may include required inspections, materials availability, approvals or coordination between trades. Each constraint is tied to a specific activity and includes critical details, such as who’s responsible and when it must be resolved.
By tracking constraints, teams can proactively remove blockers and keep the project tasks on schedule. Constraints can be added directly in the log or through activity tags.
How to open the constraint log
Follow these steps to access the full list of project constraints:
- In both daily view and plan view on a phone, the constraint log button is found next to the Add Stage Activity button.
- The constraint log dialog will open in the center of the screen.
This log provides an overview of all constraints, both active and resolved, organized in an easy-to-scan table.
Tapping the constraint log table opens a streamlined version of the constraint log designed for mobile, focusing on ease of use for trades in the field.
Understanding the constraint log tabs
The constraint log is divided into three tabs:
- Open — a list of all constraints that are currently unresolved and may block progress.
- Resolved — a history of constraints that have already been addressed.
- All — a combined view showing both open and resolved constraints in one list.
Each tab contains a list of constraints, with each row representing a single constraint.
How to add a new constraint
There may be a constraint on a project that is not specific to one activity. When this occurs, it can be added in the constraint log.
To log a new constraint:
- Click the Add constraint button at the top of the constraint log.
- The Add constraint dialog will appear.
Fill out the following fields:
- Constraint (required) — describe the issue briefly.
- Details (optional) — include any extra notes or context.
- Person responsible (optional) — assign ownership.
- Date to be resolved (required) — select a deadline in the calendar.
3. Click save to create the constraint or cancel to discard.
Note: The save button is unavailable until all required fields are completed.
Edit an existing constraint
- In the Open tab, tap a constraint item to open the edit constraint page.
- You can update:
-
- Constraint description
-
- Details
-
- Person responsible
-
- Date to be resolved
-
- Move the toggle to resolved
-
- A resolved date field appears — select the date.
Once saved and marked as resolved, the item moves to the closed tab.
Quick tip: The mobile constraint log enables trades in the field to log and resolve issues instantly, ensuring real-time visibility and documentation without disrupting workflow.
