Import master milestones

Set up high-level deadlines by importing milestone data

With master milestones, you can establish project-wide checkpoints that will appear consistently in both the weekly view and phase pull view. These milestones in Nialli™ Visual Planner come from the master schedule that is typically in Microsoft® Project, Oracle® P6 Professional or Asta Powerproject®, and they serve as fixed reference points for planning and performance tracking.

Prepare the milestone import file

  1. Export milestone data to Excel® or CSV format from Oracle P6, Asta Powerproject, Microsoft Project or a similar platform.
  2. Your file must include the following fields only:
    • ID — ID of the milestone.
    • Master milestone name — name of the milestone.
    • Date — YYYY-MM-DD.
  3. Remove any additional columns — only keep columns A to C. Arrange them as:
    • Column A — ID.
    • Column B — Master milestone name.
    • Column C — Date (YYYY-MM-DD).

Format dates to YYYY-MM-DD

If your file already uses the YYYY-MM-DD format, skip this section. Otherwise:

  1. Select the entire Date column.
  2. Right-click the column header and select Format.
  3. In the Number formatting dialog:
    • Select Locale: English (United States).
    • Set the format to YYYY-MM-DD.

All dates should now display correctly.

Save the file on your computer in a location that you will browse to when importing the milestones in the next step.

Import master milestones

  1. Open Nialli Visual Planner and click the Nialli logo to open the side menu.
  2. Select Settings, then go to the Plan tab.
  3. Select Import master milestones
  4. Click Browse to select the Excel file you prepared.
  5. Click OK to confirm.

Upon import:

  • A dedicated master milestones lane will appear in weekly view and phase pull view.
  • Milestones can be added again as needed.
  • The lane is fixed (1/3 size) and cannot be collapsed.
  • Important note: The master milestones lane cannot be deleted.

Using master milestones in your plan

To create a plan milestone from a master milestone:

  1. Click and hold the master milestone.
  2. Drag it into the required lane.
  3. Release it to drop a copy, which you can then edit.

If multiple milestones fall on the same day, they stack. Click the stack to cycle through them.

Selecting a master milestone will highlight all associated plan milestones.

Deviation warning:  If a plan milestone is moved away from its master milestone, an alert will appear showing how many days it has shifted forward or back
