Add and edit activities and tasks in weekly planning

Create, update and manage activities and daily tasks

In Nialli™ Visual Planner, each activity represents a multiday scope of work that’s tracked with tags on the planning board. You can add, edit and manage both the activity details and each daily task to ensure accurate planning and smooth coordination across trades.

Note: The permission level granted to you determines which functions you have access to. For example, if you have been assigned the Edit my trade permission, you will only be able to move, edit and add your own activities.

Add an activity

To add a new activity to a lane:

  1. Right-click the lane day cell, or touch and hold on a touchscreen, where you want to place the activity.
  2. In the menu, select Add activity.
  3. In the Add activity to [lane name] dialog, fill in the following:
    • Activity name (required).
    • Schedule activity ID (optional) — can be pulled from your master schedule.
    • Trade (required) — select from drop-down list.
      • By default, only active trades are shown.
      • To view all trades (active and inactive), use the toggle to switch off the Active trades filter.
    • Number of days — the number of days the activity will require (1–99). Default value is 1.
    • Crew size — the number of people involved (1–99). Default value is 2.
    • Planning mode — the activity can be populated on the selected date from the start date or the end date of the activity. Default value is start date.
  4. Click Save to create the activity or Cancel to discard changes.

To add an activity to the Stage Area, select Add activity in the menu on the left and follow the instructions above.

Note: The Save button is unavailable until all required fields are completed.

Note: On touch devices, tapping the Activity name or Schedule activity ID fields will automatically open the on-screen keyboard.

Edit an activity

To modify an existing activity:

  1. Right-click any tag, or press and hold on a touchscreen, that belongs to the activity you want to edit.
  2. Select Edit activity in the contextual menu.
  3. In the dialog, you can update:
    • Activity name (required).
    • Schedule activity ID (optional).
    • Trade (required) — select in drop-down list.
      • By default, only active trades are shown.
      • To view all trades (active and inactive), use the toggle to switch off the Active trades filter.
    • Copy activity — use this option to create a duplicate with the same details.
  4. Click Save to create the activity or Cancel to discard changes.

Add a constraint to an existing activity

Inside the Edit activity dialog, you can add a constraint to the selected activity. Adding constraints directly in the task dialog ensures that blockers are captured in real time and the constraint is automatically associated with the activity in the log.

  1. In the constraint drop-down list, click Add constraint.
  2. Fill out the following fields:
    • Constraint name (required).
    • Activity constrained (auto-filled).
    • Details (optional) — add relevant notes.
    • Person responsible (optional).
    • Date to be resolved (optional) — select in the calendar.
  3. Click Save to create the activity or Cancel to discard changes.

Note: The Save button is unavailable until all required fields are completed.

Note: When a constraint is added to a task, a yellow dot will appear on the affected tag — and on all subsequent tags marked as dependent on the same activity. This visual cue indicates the activity has a constraint that prevents the work from being done and requires attention before proceeding.

Edit a constraint in the Edit activity dialog

In addition to appearing in the constraint log, constraints appear in a list on all activity tags that are affected. To edit a constraint directly in the activity:

  1. Right-click the activity tag and select Edit activity.
  2. Click the constraint drop-down list and select the constraint to open the Edit constraint dialog.
  3. In the dialog, you can update:
    • Constraint name (required).
    • Activity constrained (auto-filled).
    • Details (optional) — notes or context.
    • Person responsible (optional).
    • Date to be resolved — select in the calendar.
    • Resolved toggle — when enabled, a new field appears in which to enter the Resolved date.
  4. Click Save to confirm your changes or Cancel to discard them.

Note: When the Resolved toggle is turned on and a resolved date is set and saved:

  • The constraint will be marked as resolved in the constraint log.
  • The constraint will be removed from the list of any activities it had previously affected.
  • The yellow dot indicators on those activity tags will also disappear, showing that the constraint is no longer active.

Edit a daily activity task

To update a specific day’s task tag:

  1. Double-click the tag, press and hold on a touchscreen, or right-click and select Edit tag
  2. Edit the following fields:
    • Task name.
    • Details.
    • Crew size — defined during tag creation (1–99).
    • Actual crew size — updated during status review (1–99).
    • Tag status — tracks the progress and completion of daily tasks. When a task is completed, the owner of the activity marks the task as Done. A supervisor confirms this by marking it as Closed. When it has not been completed, Not done is selected, the tag tilts and a reason for variance is selected. The task tag status can be:
      • None
      • Not done — triggers Reason for variance drop-down list
      • Done — shows a single stroke
      • Closed — shows an X

Note: When a task is marked as Not done, a built-in drop-down list will appear with the reasons to choose from. Plan administrators can customize Reasons for Variance in settings.

Note: You can also add a constraint to the task. The tags in the activity and any dependent activities will show an alert that there is a constraint on getting the work done. The constraint will appear in the constraint log.

Note: To make changes to the entire activity, click the icon at the top of the Edit tag dialog and the Edit activity dialog will open.

           3.    Click Save to confirm edits or Cancel to discard.
